Meet B, An Awesome Princess!*
You’ve probably seen our little awesome Princess* B - she is the fabulous and adorable model for our Pirates, Starry Night, and Trucks - Kerpow! dresses.
Why is B one of our models? Because she is one of the girls who inspired us to start Princess Awesome - a girl full of imagination with a broad range of interests.
Change is in the Air
You know how when you learn a new word it suddenly seems like you’re hearing that word way more than you used to?
Well, it may just be that phenomenon at work here, but I don’t think so. Since Eva and I started Princess Awesome a little over a year ago, it seems like I’m learning about businesses with a similar bent all the time. People all over the place seem to be noticing that a lot of girls and a lot of girls’ interests are left out of the more mainstream clothing and toy business. We started Princess Awesome not because we think that girls shouldn’t like wearing pink or playing princess, but because we think that many girls can and, more importantly, already do enjoy those traditionally “girly” things and also other things. We saw an unmet need in the girls clothing market and decided to go after it.
About the Designer - Elishka Jepson
Elishka Jepson is a rocket scientist by day, graphic designer by night! She focuses on graphic and fabric design in her side business, Robyriker Designs. She especially loves to combine two of her passions, STEM and art, into fun, technical-themed designs. She lives in Tucson, AZ with her husband, two kids and herd of basset hounds. When she's not rocket science-ing, designing, or wrangling (human or puppy) kids, she enjoys reading, sewing, and enjoying the wonderful desert she lives in!
Pink
Before my daughter was born, my husband and I made the bold statement that we were not going to buy her any pink clothing. If someone gave us a gift, we said, fine. We won’t return it, but we won’t buy her anything pink ourselves.
If someone had pressed us at the time, we don’t think we could have given a coherent, articulate answer. We probably would have spouted a mish-mosh of the following:
Evolution of the Busy Cars Dress
When Rebecca and I had our first “Ah ha! Someone should make that kind of clothing!” conversation, one of the things she mentioned was a dress with a road on it. We thought it would be fun to be able to play on the dress - just like my kids drive their trucks all over that Ikea rug.

In Which We Answer All Your Questions - OR - We Have to Start Somewhere
You might be wondering why:

We’re not making boys’ clothes
- One day, when Princess Awesome is cruising along with a catalog full of awesome clothes, we’d love to start a boys’ branch. Maybe we’ll call it, as one friend suggested, Captain Adorable. We would love to make t-shirts with flowers or butterflies that boys would want to wear, and anyone who has ever attempted to dress their little boy in something other than navy blue or dark grey in the winter knows there’s a market for colorful boys’ clothing. But we got into this business to change things for girls, and we’ve got to start somewhere, so we’re starting here.
Origin Story
Superman has one. Batman has one. And we have one, too.
It started back in April of 2013. I stopped in a big chain store because my daughter, E, then almost three, needed new pajamas. And I did what I always did when buying her pajamas. First I went to the girls section and picked out a few sets that had some assortment of cute, pastel colors with ice cream cones, hearts, and butterflies. Then I walked to the other side of the store and bought her a few pairs from the boys section - red ones with dinosaurs, dark blue ones with rocket ships and planets, and an orange and blue set with construction equipment.
Where have we been?!
And… we’re back! Princess Awesome fans, you may have been wondering where we’ve been for the past seven months. In person, many of you have asked us what’s going on with the business. We’re starting our blog with the story of our business so far, including why we stalled out for a few months, where we are now, and where we plan to go next.
