The Future is Bright for Women and Girls in Data Science
Some fields of science are more hands-on and easy to understand as a newcomer. Think of the sciences showcased in museums with their collections of large dinosaur fossils. Microbiology isn't usually on display like that but it does have something in common with paleontology - as all science-based research does. Even the most engaging science can remain elusive from the public and is often not examined even in undergraduate courses.
That aspect of science is the collection and analysis of data! Data is simply the information that scientists collect. They collect it absolutely everywhere, from the far reaches of space to your interactions online. You will never see more excitement or curiosity than when you watch scientists trying to make sense of data - understanding the story that their experiments and observations are telling them.

More than 100 customers bought the 175 items available during the sale, and raised an astonishing $2,374.24, to bring Princess Awesome's contribution to the CDC Foundation to $2,814.74.

Sci Chic Creates Styles That Speak to the Feminine Geek
The cultural narrative about scientists being male and unfashionable is a factor in discouraging girls from pursuing careers in the sciences. Sci Chic’s beautifully designed pieces push back against those stereotypes, giving aspiring scientists the opportunity to showcase their fields of study with elegance and sartorial wit. By presenting STEM fields as compatible with traditionally feminine tastes, Sci Chic is changing the narrative about who “belongs” in science.
We're All Still Learning
Recently, I met a girl who only had very limited use of her hands and wrists as a means to engage with the art materials we provided. We set her up with the standard supplies; a paint brush, some water, a piece of paper and a paper plate palette containing a selection of colored blobs of paint. I wasn’t sure what she may or may not have needed from me, or any of the other volunteers, and wanted to make sure she knew I was there to be useful. I made sure to ask if there was anything I could get her: More paper? A better table? Different paints? As I hovered like a hummingbird, all smiles and good intentions, she looked at me with a slightly weary expression and politely said, “No, thank you”. Yet I kept an eye on her from a respectful distance, just in case.

A Pocket Full of Independence
Do pockets really make a difference in how we navigate our lives? I think they do. From an early age, kids with pockets have a slight edge on learning independence. They don’t need someone else to hold things for them when they need both hands. Those tiny moments of self-sufficiency set in motion mindsets and methods of operating that ripple throughout our lives. A child with a pocket can go a little farther and have a little more confidence than a child who constantly needs someone else present to hold or monitor their necessities.
What Is It Like to Be a Girl?
Some boys might ask, “What is it like being a girl?”
My simple answer is “It is being myself.”
“Being myself” means liking some boyish and some girlish stuff. If I had to name some things that I like they would be dolls, photography, drawing, watching TV with my dad, Star Wars, and the color blue.
MakerGirl - Creating Confidence in the Next Generation of Engineers
I started working for MakerGirl a nonprofit organization based in Champaign, Illinois, this year as a senior majoring in Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois. MakerGirl’s vision is to inspire young girls to pursue careers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). The organization hosts workshops that teach girls ages 7-10 about various topics, basic modeling software, and 3D printing technology.
