Talking with girls and engaging with the females who were working in shark research had myself and several others thinking about how these young girls should be able to learn from the female scientists. Looking at the experiences of these role models could help them see and better understand how they can go on to one day work with sharks. It was then that we founded The Gills Club, an education initiative of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy dedicated to connecting girls with female scientists from around the world, sharing knowledge, and inspiring shark and ocean conservation.

It’s hard to dissuade her of other conclusions that she’s drawn - she’s already figured out that pink means “for girls.” This is confusing to her because she and her brothers play with dolls and tea sets and other things that come in pink boxes, so she doesn’t seem to think that the actual toys are limited to girls. There are always girls and boys in the non-pink aisles. But observational data to the contrary about the pink aisle is weak. I’m struggling with all four kids to get them to see beyond pink - which brings me to the worst offender of all...

Most striking, though, was the headline describing how Eva's Girl Scout leader had changed her life, which brought tears to my eyes. Imagine the power of those sewing lessons that her leader gave her. Several of my Girl Scout "sewing students" have worked on a project to sew hundreds of reusable, sustainable menstrual supplies. These scout-sewn reusable kits will be delivered to girls throughout throughout the developing world.

Brave Girls are all around us. They’re doing things that frighten them. They’re taking risks that might not pay off. They’re learning hard lessons about “the way things are” - and they’re changing them.
If you’re raising a Brave Girl, we congratulate you.

I learned to speak five languages and how to work in the tourism business, especially hotels, but one fateful spring I landed in the Bahamas on a vacation to learn how to scuba dive and I never left.
I moved forward in the industry thanks to my passion but also convinced that the best way to be a woman was to be less girly, because everybody “knew” that a girl could not have possibly been able to carry tanks through the forest and go exploring new caves. Then one day I realized that this “girl” was doing exactly that - and that it was perfectly ok to wear pink and to like dresses and heels, or not.

Dressed as Wonder Woman, I held my shoulders back and my chin up. My stride lengthened. I got up early and got an hour of work in before my family woke, then strode into my daughter’s bedroom to help her get ready for school like I’d just conquered the world. I stood up for myself more at work, though they couldn’t see my clothes on the other side of that computer screen. I love clothes and costuming, and even I was surprised to see what a difference a Wonder Woman print dress made in my outlook on life.

Girls’ clothing is often designed more for visual appeal than for utility - and that affects how girls play, move, and navigate daily life. We’re committed to making dresses with pockets - because we can, because they’re useful, and because girls deserve them.
