We Deserve Pockets!

by Rebecca Melsky October 31, 2017 1 min read 13 Comments

What do you put in your pockets?

Here’s what I put in mine: Phone. Keys. Credit card. Cash. Parking lot tickets. Movie tickets. Twist ties. Hair ties. Gym card. Rubber bands. Safety pins. Gum. And whatever my kids hand me when they don’t have pockets in their clothes (not at all once, of course).

What do your kids put in their pockets?

Here’s what mine put in theirs: Rocks. Acorns. Twist ties. Hair ties. Legos. Plastic jewelry. Stickers. Sticks. Pencils. Action figures. Temporary tattoos. My keys or Costco card when I don’t have pockets in my clothes.

Whether we’re carrying things out of necessity or because we found an awesome little treasure, my kids and I rely on pockets. If we don’t have pockets, we rely on each others’ pockets.

At Princess Awesome we believe in pockets. They foster independence. They give kids freedom. Kids needs pockets. And girls need and deserve them just as much as boys.

And it’s not just kids who deserve pockets. So do women. Even though we’re not making adult clothes (yet!), luckily there’s another awesome company out there making leggings with pockets for grown-ups - Superfit Hero. Founder Micki Krimmel believes in pockets just as much as we do, which is why she also puts pockets in all of her super high-quality, size-inclusive athletic leggings.

I don’t like to be carrying a purse around. Hence, I love cargo pockets. Princess Awesome hitting the nail again with this great idea!

I love your company and my three-year-old granddaughter loves your dresses! The rocket dress is often her first choice of what to wear, and she even asks to sleep in it sometimes.

Cargo pockets were the best invention! My mom asks… “Are you still not carrying a purse?” when she sees me stuff my phone, keys, and mini wallet in my pockets. “Nope. Now that my child doesn’t need a change of clothes, extra snacks, etc to leave the house, back to no bags for me.”

About the Designer - Carrie Cantwell

I’m an illustrator, surface designer and educator based in Atlanta, GA. I live with my boyfriend and our three rescue kitties, who very often make it into my art, especially the two black cats.

I feel very comfortable creating art for kids, because I'm really a kid at heart. I love cute animals and bright colors. I find it particularly satisfying to distill complex concepts into simple shapes that are stylized but easily recognizable.

Sienna Farr was one of Princess Awesome's first models, before our Kickstarter, before we were much more than a dream and a few dresses made of tee shirts and quilting material. She died in a fire that also seriously injured her mother on August 11, 2023, aged 13.
