The mission behind Princess Awesome clothing is to create clothes for girls that make space for them to be anything they want to be—princesses or pirates, scientists or ninjas, astronauts or train conductors. We think it’s awesome when girls wear our clothes and start conversations that go beyond what they look like and into a world of what they want to do.

But clothes are only one part of the equation. Toys, experiences, and media also send messages to the girls in our society, and we at Princess Awesome love to recommend the ones we believe help show kids everything their world has to offer.

With the Princess Awesome Book Club, we’ve curated books for kids from baby board books all the way up to chapter books that show a diverse group of women, girls, and even female-type creatures that are learning, exploring, and adventuring to their fullest potential. In the coming weeks, we will be presenting these picks with giveaways, interviews with the authors, and reviews from actual kids who love these stories as much as we do.

The first Princess Awesome Book Club Pick is Shark Lady: The True Story of How Eugenie Clark Became the Ocean's Most Fearless Scientist, written by Jess Keating and illustrated by Marta Alvarez Miguens. This gorgeously illustrated picture book covers the life and work of Japanese-American ichthyologist Eugenie Clark, a pioneer in her field. Clark overcame sexism in school and her career to become an internationally renowned researcher and scientist and a pioneer in the field of scuba diving to study marine biology. We hope that you and your child enjoy learning about Eugenie Clark and her sharks as much as our family did.
