Even if we don’t match, let’s be Pals!

by Eva St. Clair June 13, 2017 2 min read 5 Comments

Wouldn’t our planet be a nicer place to live if we could all just get along and, dare I say, even become friends? That’s the inspiration for Pals Socks. What originally started as battling mittens morphed into something much more meaningful.

With a background in design, I initially created prototypes for mismatched animal mittens, named Vs. Mittens. They came as predator and prey, so your hands could pretend to battle each other. It was my first foray into running a creative business. Scary but fun!

Unfortunately mittens are SO seasonal! My first business lesson. Mittens turned into mismatched animal socks. BUT. Given our current state of affairs, I realized that Vs. had to become Pals.

I wanted to create a fun, colorful kids brand with a powerful message. It is my personal belief that it’s awesome to try new things, explore new places and make all kinds of friends. Life is more interesting, exciting and peaceful.

What if all kids could start out thinking that difference is great? That it’s awesome we don’t all match, that we don’t have the same ideas or have to look exactly alike? What if we could inspire our future global citizens to promote inclusivity and acceptance? Yes, Dragons and Unicorns can *defeet the norm* and become best friends. So can a T-Rex and Triceratops!

Not only is spreading the love part of our mission, it’s also important to us that we give back. Pals Socks works with different organizations who have similar goals of making our daily existence happier, kinder and more peaceful.

That’s our story so far! We launched at the end of 2015, sell to over 300 stores around the world, relocated to Philly via Brooklyn and continue to create positive social change. Even if we don’t match, let’s be Pals!

Princess AWESOME is nothing short of it!! Twirly dresses could not be more appropriately named, my daughter loves to twirl and watch it flare out…and watch it in the mirror for a total body effect — too cute!! Thanks!!!

I’ve never seen something like this! How fun and a way to allow your child to continue to be creative in mix and matching all their new Pal socks!

About the Designer - Carrie Cantwell

I’m an illustrator, surface designer and educator based in Atlanta, GA. I live with my boyfriend and our three rescue kitties, who very often make it into my art, especially the two black cats.

I feel very comfortable creating art for kids, because I'm really a kid at heart. I love cute animals and bright colors. I find it particularly satisfying to distill complex concepts into simple shapes that are stylized but easily recognizable.

Sienna Farr was one of Princess Awesome's first models, before our Kickstarter, before we were much more than a dream and a few dresses made of tee shirts and quilting material. She died in a fire that also seriously injured her mother on August 11, 2023, aged 13.
