About the Designer - Shalini Ayre

February 28, 2026 2 min read

I’m a full-time designer and illustrator with a lifelong love of making things—whether
it was card‑making, crochet, or writing (I’m also a published author). After time in the
corporate world, I stepped away to write and eventually found my way into surface
pattern design, where I discovered the perfect blend of creativity and craft.

While surface pattern design is my specialty, I’m expanding my portfolio to include
illustration work for books, schools, and brand identities. My style leans toward bold,
vibrant, and elegantly crafted visuals that aim to captivate and inspire.

When I’m not designing, I’m usually spending time with my husband, coordinating
my daughter’s busy social life, or leading a nonprofit as its president. I also love
unwinding with a good book or getting completely absorbed in a K‑drama.

I don’t fit neatly into a single artistic category like Impressionism. I cross a couple of styles such as pop art (bold, graphic), minimalism, (clean lines, limited color and simplicity) with a touch of realism (still life).

Pardon the pun but I’m drawn to flowers and plants. But I love to explore all kinds of topics – birds, kawaii, historical patterns… as it’s an opportunity to learn and grow as an artist.

I submitted art for a children’s book and won. Bug and Bear Press is a company that regularly hosts competitions as their mission is to empower youth to co-create, co-author and co-imagine the stories they love.

I designed a logo for the ‘Bug Olympics’ for a story called Faye’s Foil. It was so much fun to create insects in a world where they are working out.

I start off with paper and pencil, ink my work and then scan and complete it in Adobe Illustrator. Working on becoming proficient in Procreate, but it’s not quite my jam.

I put certain patterns onto ‘print on demand’ products. You’ll find me on Redbubble and Zazzle.
