The Busy Dresses - The First Ever "Play-able" Dress

by Rebecca Melsky November 23, 2015 3 min read 2 Comments

We present to you, the Busy Dress:

Here is an abbreviated history of the Busy Dress:

Rebecca: What if we make a dress with a car and a road on it?

Eva: YES, and what if the car is on a string so the girl can drive it around on the dress and play with the dress?

Rebecca: YES, and we could do other vehicles, too! Like trains and airplanes!

Eva: YES. Let's do it!

Fast forward two and a half years and multiple prototypes...

And we were ready to move the Busy Dresses to manufactured production.

Having gone through all of these early stages of the dress, when we designed the Busy Dresses for manufactured production, we knew that we needed them to be:

Getting all of these pieces lined up wasn’t easy and it wasn’t cheap, but we are proud to say, we did it. Let us show you.

  • Utterly different from any other dress we’d ever seen
    • We think so. Don't you? :)

  • Beautiful

  • Soft
    • Made with a gorgeous 92% cotton, 8% Lycra fabric, the dresses are heavy, sturdy and so so soft. Said one of our little models, “I don’t want to take this off! It feels sooooo good on me!”

  • Stretchy
    • The Lycra in the dress makes it stretch well over heads and arms. Sizing is easier as the stretch allows a dress to fit on multiple size girls and the sash can tie a dress that’s a bit too big.

  • Colorful and Bright
    • The base fabrics are bold and bright - primary colors not often found in the girls’ section of the clothing store - and the printed designs jump off the fabric.

  • Easy to play in
    • The soft, stretchy fabric allows for freedom of movement and play.

  • Easy to play with
    • The vehicles are conveniently located at the ends of the sashes for easy playing by the wearer and can be tied away when not needed.

  • Functional (pockets were a MUST)
    • Hidden pockets tucked away on the sides of the dresses allows for storage of extra cars, planes or trains, acorns, pebbles, and other treasures found out in the world.

  • Perfectly twirly
    • How’s this for a perfect twirl?

  • Well-made
    • The designs are sewn on using an “applique” technique in which smaller pieces of fabric are sewn on top of a larger piece to create a pattern or show a decoration. Each Busy Dress has between 7 and 10 pieces of applique sewn on using an adorable, zig zag stitch that requires precise, expert work on the part of the seamstress, something we have been lucky to find with our production facility.

In a boutique, the Busy Dresses would retail for well over $120. Seriously, well over $120 each for a dress that is unique, beautiful, and perfect for active little girls.

But we're skipping the middleman, and bringing the Busy Dresses straight to you for $79!

And if you catch them the day they launch - MondayNovember 30 - there will be a special, one-day only Busy Dress sale - 20% off all Busy Dresses.

On November 30 only, you'll be able to get a completely unique, play-able, beautiful dress that your daughter can wear over and over and pass down to her little sister for $63.20.

Don't wait! When these run out, they’re out. We made a limited quantity thanks to our Kickstarter backers, and we’re not sure when we’ll be making more. GET YOUR BUSY DRESS ON NOVEMBER 30! HOORAY!!!

Extra awesome for kids with autism or when going places like stores with breakable stuff. “Hands on your dress! Hands in your pockets. Drive your car!” always works better than “don’t touch.!”

Predictably, I’m wondering when you will be making more! Sadly, the designs my daughters would love most are out of stock in their sizes.

About the Designer - Carrie Cantwell

I’m an illustrator, surface designer and educator based in Atlanta, GA. I live with my boyfriend and our three rescue kitties, who very often make it into my art, especially the two black cats.

I feel very comfortable creating art for kids, because I'm really a kid at heart. I love cute animals and bright colors. I find it particularly satisfying to distill complex concepts into simple shapes that are stylized but easily recognizable.

Sienna Farr was one of Princess Awesome's first models, before our Kickstarter, before we were much more than a dream and a few dresses made of tee shirts and quilting material. She died in a fire that also seriously injured her mother on August 11, 2023, aged 13.
